THE HISTORY OF THE JANISSARY ARMY AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE OTTOMAN PERIODAbstract
The Janissary army, established during the 14th century, was one of the most influential military and political institutions of the Ottoman Empire. Originally composed of young Christian boys taken through the devshirme system, the Janissaries were trained as elite infantry units loyal to the Sultan. Their rigorous military training, strict discipline, and advanced weaponry made them a decisive force in Ottoman campaigns, both in domestic security and foreign conquests. Beyond their military role, the Janissaries held significant political influence, often intervening in state decisions, supporting or deposing sultans, and shaping the internal balance of power. This dual role of the Janissaries—as both a military elite and a political force—contributed to the structural stability and occasional instability of the Ottoman Empire. Studying their history provides insight into the relationship between military institutions and political authority in early modern empires.
