This academic article examines the role of German studies in dismantling widespread stereotypes about German society in the context of German as a Foreign Language (GFL) instruction. Based on theoretical foundations regarding the origins and impact of stereotypes, typical misconceptions frequently encountered by learners without direct exposure to Germany are analyzed. The article demonstrates that German studies is a key instrument for fostering intercultural competence and enables learners to perceive cultural differences in a nuanced way. Through the use of authentic materials, project-based learning methods, intercultural comparisons, and simulation-based approaches, stereotypical perceptions can be effectively deconstructed and replaced with realistic, fact-based understandings. The findings underscore that German studies goes beyond simply conveying facts and makes a lasting contribution to the reflective abilities, communication skills, and cultural sensitivity of GFL learners.
