The reliability of electric power systems is a crucial factor for ensuring stable economic development and social well-being. Power system disturbances caused by faults, equipment failures, or external influences can lead to widespread outages and significant financial losses. Relay protection systems play a vital role in enhancing system reliability by rapidly detecting abnormal operating conditions, isolating faulty components, and preventing the propagation of disturbances throughout the network. This study examines the theoretical foundations and practical significance of relay protection systems in modern power systems. Particular attention is given to the evolution from electromechanical relays to digital and intelligent protection devices, as well as their impact on fault clearance speed, selectivity, and system stability. The paper also analyzes advanced protection strategies, including adaptive and wide-area protection schemes, and discusses challenges related to renewable energy integration and cybersecurity. The findings demonstrate that properly coordinated and automated relay protection systems significantly improve the reliability, resilience, and operational efficiency of contemporary electric power networks.
