Abstract

This study examines when the investigation of Korean dialects began, identifies the early historical texts in which information about dialects appears, and analyzes the major domains through which dialects have been systematically studied. Particular attention is given to the classification of dialectology into its principal research areas and the development of methodological approaches within the field.
