Abstract

This article presents an English translation of the section devoted to Bayazid Ansari and the Roshani movement from the monumental Soviet academic work History of Afghanistan (Vol. I, edited by V. M. Masson and V. A. Romodin). The text describes the social, religious, and political background of the anti-feudal uprising led by Bayazid Ansari in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Drawing upon historical and philological analysis, the authors interpret the Roshani doctrine as both a mystical-religious reform movement and a form of popular resistance against Mughal domination and Afghan feudal elites.
