A cognitive strategy called spaced repetition involves going over knowledge at progressively longer intervals in order to enhance long-term memory retention. This approach, which has its roots in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, uses the brain's innate memory consolidation mechanism to reverse the forgetting curve, a phenomena that Hermann Ebbinghaus initially noticed. Spaced repetition is more effective than conventional study techniques like cramming because it improves memory retention by strengthening brain pathways right before knowledge is likely to be forgotten. This method is based on the spacing effect, which states that material is better kept when reviewed across a number of sessions with increasing intervals between reviews than when studied in a single session. Long-term retention is further strengthened by active recall, which involves accessing information from memory as opposed to passively reviewing it.
